Samsung took the stage during Mobile World Congress 2014 in Barcelona to announce several new products, and among them was the Gear 2 smartwatch. The device sits one level above the Gear Neo, which doesn’t have a 2-megapixel camera, and is Samsung’s current flagship wearable.
Samsung will launch the device in a few colors, but its focus this time around is on fashion, too. That said, it will release several different colored and patterned bands, but it also works with any 22mm watchband. The pin comes out really easily, so it should be a breeze to customize yourself. The watch runs Tizen, just like the Gear 2 Neo, and we found the interface to be simple, colorful and useful. Apps will be key, and right now there are more than 100 coming down the pipeline.
The Gear 2 looks and feels nicer than the original, but it’s also very similar. Samsung will need to keep the price well below its old price point if it really wants the device to take off — especially in light of rumors that Apple has an iWatch coming, and in the face of the really solid Pebble and Pebble Steel smarwatches.
