Samsung officially unveiled the Galaxy J2 (2016) on Friday. This may look like a standard mid-range device, but it’s the company’s first phone to feature an exciting new Smart Glow notification system.
Smart Glow uses a ring of LED light around the rear camera to get your attention with color-coded alerts. You can set up four priority notifications, picking from your favorite contacts and apps. Then the LED light will glow with a specific color of your choice when a notification from one of those apps of people comes through.
Smart Glow can also warn you when the battery is low or storage space it running out. Samsung is even using it to help you snap better selfies with the phone’s primary 8-megapixel camera. Just line up the shot with some assistance from the Galaxy J2 and the LED will automatically glow when it’s time to snap the photo.
Otherwise, this is a pretty basic smartphone. It features a 5-inch HD AMOLED display, a 2600mAh battery, a 1.5GHz quad-core processor, a 5-megapixel front-facing camera, 8GB of expandable storage and 1.5GB of RAM. It runs Android Marshmallow and comes in gold, black or silver. The Galaxy J2 (2016) launches in India next week for INR 9,750 (about $145), but Samsung hasn’t mentioned any plans to bring the device to the U.S.
Samsung also unveiled the Galaxy J Max, a new Android phablet with entry-level specs. That includes a massive 7-inch display with a pretty rough WXGA resolution, a 4,000mAh battery and a quad-core 1.5GHz processor. It also features 16GB of expandable storage, 1.5GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel camera, a 2-megapixel front-facing camera and Android 5.1 Lollipop software. The device comes in black or gold and ships with a Bluetooth headset so you can make calls without holding this behemoth up to your face in public. It’s launching later this month in India for INR 13,400 (about $200).
