Chatter surrounding Samsung’s alleged foldable phone has been around for a while. Now, new renders from concept artist Jonah Dähnert created in conjunction with Nieuwe Mobiel imagine what this device could look like, and his creation is absolutely stunning.
For the most part, anytime we talk about Samsung’s foldable phone, we immediately think about the display. However, that’s the easy part to imagine. The big challenge lies in how the frame will bend and Dähnert addresses this question by using a fulcrum hinge similar to what Microsoft uses for the Surface Book.
Obviously, Dähnert created something more stylized with the hinge being more flushed and sleek-looking. The hinge runs across the center of the phone, meaning the glass back won’t be one single pane, but two: one at the top and one at the bottom.
The top part houses the dual camera system that has become a constant fixture on flagship Samsung devices.
I’ll be honest, the phone looks quite jarring at first glance, but after a while, it kind of grows on you. The point of the foldable function is purely to see how technology can be applied because it isn’t a truly foldable phone—there still lives a gap when the phone is folded. But just imagining Samsung pushing the boundaries of phone design to this level is very enticing.
Oppo and Vivo already came out with their cutting-edge devices that sport a full bezel-less display. But the cameras are mechanical, hiding them within the phone when they are not in use. Samsung is aiming to do something similar with its foldable phone, introducing advanced methods in smartphone design by increasing display size yet reducing the footprint of a phone.
