For those few folks out there that were still holding out doubts about the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are on their way, it looks like you can stop worrying.
A reader has pointed us to a trademark filing in South Korea that was submitted on Feb. 4. The applicant is listed as “Samsung C & T Corporation | SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS” and simply requests a trademark for “Galaxy S6.” I think the most surprising aspect of this filing is that Samsung hadn’t applied for this already. You would think they would want to lock down this name for several generations into the future just to be safe, but apparently it waits until closer to the launch event.
Digging through the site a little further, we also found a similar filing for “S6 edge” filed on the same day by the same parties.
While these trademark filings don’t give any indication to what we can expect from the devices, previous rumors have indicated that the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge will both offer similar specs, including a Quad HD display, upgraded cameras, Samsung’s own 64-bit Exynos processor and a redesigned fingerprint reader. The devices should run Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box with a slimmed down version of TouchWiz on top, and may even introduce a new mobile payment service called Samsung Pay.
Rumors have been pointing to a launch for the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge at the upcoming Samsung Unpacked event to take place in Barcelona, Spain on March 1. This coincides with Mobile World Congress, which is the largest mobile event of the year. TechnoBuffalo will be on hand for the event and will bring you all of the news about both devices as its announced.
Thanks Sam for the tip.
