Samsung Galaxy S III back

Samsung has already confirmed that its long-awaited Galaxy S III will not get its unveiling at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this month, but the Korean company could not reveal when exactly it would show of its new flagship device. It has now confirmed that the handset will get its own dedicated event during the first half of this year.

"But when?" I hear you scream. Well, we don't know exactly. Here's what Samsung had to say to TechRadar:

"Samsung is looking forward to introducing and demonstrating exciting new mobile products at Mobile World Congress 2012.

"The successor to the Galaxy S2 smartphone will be unveiled at a separate Samsung-hosted event in the first half of the year, closer to commercial availability of the product."

After the company announced at the end of January that it was "still reviewing" the Galaxy S III's launch date, it seemed unlikely that the device would show its face in Barcelona later this month. But Samsung's latest announcement has confirmed what Android fans had been fearing.

But there is one positive to take from this — especially if you're already stuck in a contract and you can't get your hands on the new device just yet anyway: The company still seems to be churning out various iterations of the Galaxy S II, so if you recently purchased one of these, you have a little more time with the device before it becomes an "old model."

And there's not too long to wait. With February already upon us, the Galaxy S III's unveiling will arrive before you even know it. And you can bet your life it'll happen before Apple announces its iPhone 5.

Are you disappointed that we'll have to wait a little while longer to see the Galaxy S III?
