The dual components of the Safety 1st Monitor make it a great choice for people who regularly change rooms in their house. I like to work inside and out, so the portable audio unit allows me to check on my sleeping baby wherever I am.

The baby in question is called Emma James — nine months old and ridiculously cute — and she will be mentioned a lot in the coming review.

What you'll love about the Safety 1st Monitor

With our little nine months old being a light sleeper – as well a sneaky little so and so – we wanted to have a monitoring system that would be sensitive enough to catch her movement noise, not just her loud cries. The audio receiver picked up every little noise she made and plays it back with excellent clarity.

I love how easy the Safety 1st app is to set up. Just scan the QR code and you are good to go.

It even has a two-way microphone that lets me try to sooth Emma from any room I am in. Of course, it never works and I have to get up and get her, but still, the idea is sound and is really well executed on the Safety 1st system.

The audio receiver also contains a Lithium-Ion battery that seems to last a few days without recharge so you can use it even while you are outside. I really enjoy being able to sit and work in my back yard and still be able to hear if Emma wakes up from her nap.

The video quality on the Safety 1st monitor is 720p resolution. That's not the best out there but it is perfectly serviceable for monitoring your baby when they are asleep. In fact, the night mode visuals are eerily good — as you can see from the photo above my child sleeps with her eyes open, which is creepy as heck — and the day mode takes good enough video for you to see any movement or erratic behavior.

I love how easy the Safety 1st app is to set up. Just scan the QR code and you are good to go. The app even works as an audio monitor as well, so when you close the app the sound from the camera will still play in the background. Now, while this is a nice feature, it will drain your phone battery extremely quickly, so only use this as a last resort.

The app also allows you to save your favorite baby moments as short videos or images. So if they are doing something very cute, or if they become the anti-christ in the depths of the night, you can capture it all on a helpful video to show your friends or the authorities.

What you'll love less about the Safety 1st Monitor

While I love the sensitivity of the microphones they can get into a feedback loop. The camera picks up sounds from other rooms which can cause it to make loud screeching noises. This doesn't happen often and if you keep the audio module away from the camera module it shouldn't be an issue but it is something to look out for.

The Safety 1st baby monitor has become a regular part of my household in a way I didn't think a baby monitor could.

Keeping the door to the nursery shut seems to be enough to stop the feedback, though the few times I have accidentally taken the audio monitor in with me, have ended with my ears hurting from the screech.

The Safety 1st monitor could also be considered a little pricey. At $200 it is on the high-end of the baby monitor range but with the addition of the app and the online services, it feels like a fair price.

Should you buy the Safety 1st Monitor?

I have been extremely happy with the Monitoring system from Safety 1st. The camera is great for the job it needs to do and the audio module is so portable, it makes it a breeze to use all around the house. If you are looking for a system that gives you the most portability, then this is for you.

4.5 out of 5

The Safety 1st baby monitor has become a regular part of my household in a way I didn't think a baby monitor could. The little audio module goes into every room with me when Emma is napping and I always feel secure knowing I can hear her.
