Eurogamer is reporting a new rumor that indicates respected game designer Fumito Ueda has left Sony. Ueda is the Lead Designer at Team Ico and was heavily involved in both the critically acclaimed and fan loved Shadow of the Colossus and ICO. His studio's current project is The Last Guardian, a title that will pit gamers with a giant, friendly beast in its assuredly unique plot and style.

While Eurogamer did not reveal the source of their information, they did indicate that Ueda has been struggling with Sony for some time now. The Last Guardian has been delayed several times since its initial announcement, and it's been absent at marquee gaming conventions for a few years running.

The Last Guardian was not shown off at the Tokyo Game Show in September. Furthermore, it was revealed that the game was to be delayed out of 2011. Ueda took the time to apologize to his studio's fans when the news broke, and we ran that story back in early September. Here's Ueda's apology:

"…to provide more challenging and better quality of content to users and to fulfill First Party Studio's obligations, I decided to postpone its release timing.

All the members of my production team are working together at a fast pace to develop and release the game in First Party Studio quality."

Finally, Eurogamer is also reporting that Fumito Ueda intends to stick with Team Ico and The Last Guardian in a freelance capacity until the project is finished. Once the game is done, Fumito Ueda will leave Sony and work on personal projects.

Consider this rumor until it's otherwise officially confirmed. We'll bring you an update if and when we hear one way or the other.
