Sonic the Hedgehog lead programmer Yuji Naka has finally released his video game Rodea the Sky Soldier into the public after half a decade of development hell. All signs point to it being a throwback to the days of Dreamcast-era design, which is a good thing, but they also point to it being a pretty wretched game in and of itself. What’s the problem?

The true story of Rodea the Sky Soldier is that it was originally in development for the Wii before being shelved for a few years. Kadokawa Games eventually picked it up again, but during that sabbatical, a console generation shift occurred, and the company ordered a Wii U and Nintendo 3DS version as well to keep up with the times.

These are the versions that have been sent to reviewers and chopped to pieces.

As a result, Naka has updated his Twitter account, asking his fans to play the Wii version, which is supposedly quite different from the others. Many across the Internet are echoing his claims, agreeing that this is the best version of the three. It runs at a much smoother framerate, controls more naturally with the Wii Remote, and is just all-around more fun to play.

The Wii version comes for free in the physical Wii U release as an added bonus, so my guess is that you should maybe pick up a copy before the Wii disc becomes a collector’s item. I won’t say that it fixes all of the problems that the game has, since I haven’t played any of them, but Rodea the Sky Soldier has a bit too much going for it to dismiss outright without playing the “best” version.

I love the old-school character models, the fantasy setting, and that sense of heyday-era SEGA that it taps into. It would be a shame if there is nothing but a bad game behind all that.
