The return of the cult hit Rez was announced last weekend at Sony’s PlayStation Experience show in the form of Rez Infinite. Now we have some full, 1080p footage that plays at the 60fps framerate the game will also use.

It’s difficult for me to be objective about Rez. When you describe the game – a musical shooting game – it sounds pretty silly and not terribly interesting. While I never played the game on Dreamcast, I was lucky enough to pick up a legitimate copy of the game shortly before it became impossible to find. It was the first time I remember a game leaving me literally breathing hard.

The entire game is synchronized from the movement on screen – including any shots you fire – to the vibration of the controller, right along with the mounting aural assault of the music as you progress through each stage. It was almost overwhelming the first time and continues to be a joy to play when I get the chance to go back to it.

The idea of it being in VR is, on its own, almost enough to sell me on the PlayStation VR headset. Anything that can add to the experience of immersion in this game is going to be worth the price of admission. The game doesn’t have a set release date, but it sounds like it might end up being a launch title alongside the PlayStation VR, even though the virtual reality aspect is optional.
