Resident Evil Revelations 2 (2)

Oops. Someone over at flipped the wrong switch and accidentally announced a brand new Resident Evil game. No doubt Capcom was waiting for TGS this year to break the big news, but it now appears that Resident Evil Revelations 2 is going to be released on the Xbox 360.

Eagle eyed reporters over at French website Gamer in a Box picked up the news before it was de-listed and was able to snatch up a single screenshot and the box art. Seeing as though this was an accidental leak, and Capcom hasn’t announced anything just yet, no more details have been provided.

Our guess is that Resident Evil Revelations 2 will also be released on the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. There is no telling if Capcom plans to employ its next-gen graphic engine Phanta Rhei at this point either, but chances are previous generation consoles are ill-equipped to run it. We’ll have to wait until Capcom says more.

For what it’s worth, this is excellent news. Resident Evil Revelations HD is the best game in the series since Resident Evil 5, perhaps even Resident Evil 4. Starting life as a Nintendo 3DS game before getting a full blown console treatment, its creepy vibe and the tight, claustrophobic gameplay wipe the floor with the abysmal Resident Evil 6 and any of the other horrible spin-offs.

Capcom developing it also shows that the company still has the ability to understand what its fans want.

This makes not just one but two major Resident Evil games in the works right now. Capcom also recently announced it is developing a remake of the GameCube remake of the first game. This REmake, as popularly called by fans, is also one of the better games in the long running series, so hopefully Capcom can pull out all the stops to make this pair fantastic. Then its young developers can take what they have learned about good modern Resident Evil games into potential future entries.

I think the series needs a bit of time to heal before anybody even mentions Resident Evil 7, and these two are the best way to go about it.
