Red Dead Redemption is, without question, the game to beat this fall. There will certainly be other huge games, but very few games are Rockstar huge. Publisher Take-Two’s CEO Strauss Zelnick talked about the expectations surrounding the game’s performance.
“Red Dead Redemption 2 is Rockstar Games’ first title developed from the ground up for the current console generation,” he said. Grand Theft Auto V has been one of the best-selling games on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, but it was originally developed for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 4, coming out in 2013. “We could not be more excited about the upcoming launch of Red Dead Redemption 2, which is poised to be another massive entertainment event.”
Zenick said that the game will be “yet another creative milestone” for Rockstar, and that the game aims to “redefine our industry” and “captivate audiences around the world.”
As you read that, though, remember that he’s the guy selling the game. It’s his job to tell us how exciting and big his game is going to be so that we’ll get excited and go out and buy it. Then again, there’s no way I’m not picking it up, so I can’t say he’s wrong.
Details about the game itself were scarce as they always are on these sorts of calls. While few in the industry are expecting Red Dead Redemption 2 to perform as well as Grand Theft Auto V, the latter is continuing to perform well and is approaching 100 million units sold since its 2013 release, making it one of the very biggest entertainment releases of all time, and certainly the biggest full-priced game. Only games like Minecraft and Tetris can stand up to it at this point.
Red Dead Redemption hits PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on October 26.
