Since the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 hit shelves, I moved more and more toward digital games. My physical shelves grew quickly at first, but that has given way to an almost entirely digital library of games. With Red Dead Redemption 2, though, I’m rethinking my strategy. This game is gargantuan.

Rockstar fansite Rockstar Intel got up close with the Red Dead Redemption 2 PS4 Pro bundle and took a microscope to the text, revealing a couple of interesting tidbits. Most interesting is the download size, which weighs in at 105 GB.

Red Dead Redemption 2 requires 105GB of hard drive space on PlayStation 4 Pro.

Now, a couple caveats. This isn’t the first game to breach 100GB with the core game install. I’m pretty sure that honor goes to Forza Motorsport 7‘s Xbox One X installation size. That brings us to the other thing. This is a PlayStation 4 Pro bundle, so it’s possible that this is the size requirement for the beefed-up, high res version in the same way that Forza wants more space if you’re playing at 4K. The download size could also be smaller or bigger than this depending on how the installation works.

Right now, though, assume that if you’re playing Red Dead Redemption 2, you should keep at least 100GB of your ISP’s transfer cap available, or you should go to the store and get the game on disc. Whichever you pick, get your hard drives ready. Both Xbox One and PlayStation 4 allow you to install games to external hard drives at this point (such as this one, this one, or this one), but many of us are going to be spending some time deleting game to make room for this monster. There’s no word on the Xbox One and Xbox One X install size(s), but you can bet it’ll be similar, if not bigger.

If the previews are anything to go by, there’s good reason for this massive download size. The level of detail in Red Dead Redemption 2 is a level higher than anything we’ve seen before, with much deeper character interaction and tons of unique animal behaviors and more. 105GB is big, but it seems like this game earns it.

The team at Rockstar Intel pulled out a couple other pieces of interesting info, too. Gameplay sessions online will be able to support as many as 32 players. I’m really hoping they’ll have some personal coop options available so I can mount up and do some regulatin’ with my friends without worrying about the usual bad actors getting in the way. Exploring Red Dead Redemption with a friend or two was one of the best ways to play it, and I’d hate to see that go out the door in favor of focus on Red Dead Redemption Online.

Finally, those of you picking the game up on PlayStation 4 will get a month timed exclusivity on downloadable content. What that content is has yet to be announced. Maybe it’ll be horse armor.

Red Dead Redemption 2 hits PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on October 26, 2018.
