The Razer Phone 2 has been officially announced and it is a do-over from its predecessor, adding all the features that were missing.
Last year, Razer took its first step into the crowded waters of smartphones with the Razer Phone. It wasn’t the best first step, missing key features like wireless charging and water and dust resistance, though it did offer a few key advancements like the 120Hz display and front-facing speakers that made it an intriguing option.
With the unveiling of the Razer Phone 2, Razer makes it clear that its trip into the smartphone market is not just a pastime but something it’s serious about.
Razer is marketing the Razer Phone 2 as a gamer’s dream phone first and foremost, and to be a gamer’s phone you need a powerful device that can handle intense games. As such, it comes with a Snapdragon 845 processor and 8GB of RAM that makes performance super snappy. It also comes with a beefy 4,000mAh battery, 64GB of storage with microSD expandability up to 2TB and a side mounted power button that doubles as a fingerprint scanner.
The front of the device stayed exactly the same down to the display size and the outlay of the front-firing speakers that get impressively loud. It has the same stunning 5.7-inch LCD display with 2560 by 1440 resolution (515 ppi) and the awesome 120Hz refresh rate returns. It’s still confounding no other smartphone maker has adopted similar technology. To top it off, Razer added a panel that gets 50-percent brighter, ensuring visibility outdoors won’t be an issue.
All of those specs are cool but let’s get to the Razer Phone 2’s killer feature and that is its redesigned body with a new glass back. Razer said it made a conscious effort to make its flagship smartphone more consumer friendly given this is where modern smartphone design is trending.
The first generation device came enclosed in an all-aluminum body that covered its sides and back. The Razer Phone 2 keeps the same body with the aluminum frame and boxy finish but adds IP67 water and dust proofing and a back glass panel that adds wireless charging, and more impressively, adds a light up RGB Razer logo.
Yes, you read that right. The Razer Phone 2 has a light up logo that takes advantage of Razer’s signature Chroma lighting meaning it can change into 16.9 million different color combinations. That sounds more like a wish list item for a smartphone than a real feature.
Razer is giving users the ability to change between three modes of brightness that takes battery life into account. It did not specify how battery life would be affected having the light up logo on full brightness. Users will also have the ability to control if the logo pulses or stays static and can customize it to light up when notifications come through.
In making the Razer Phone 2 more consumer friendly, Razer also put extra focus on the camera adding the latest Sony sensors available. Users get a dual-camera system with a 12MP wide-angle camera with f/1.75 aperture and optical image stabilization and a 12MP telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom. The main camera also supports multiple modes, including the latest craze in mobile photography, Portrait Mode.
Other notable changes include an 8MP front-facing camera, Vapor Cooling Chamber, Gigabit LTE connectivity for faster data speeds and GSM and CDMA support, which means it’ll work with any of the four major carriers. At launch, the Razer Phone 2 won’t be available through a carrier though Razer says it is working behind the scenes to change that.
Razer made it clear that though the phone will come with Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box, it is promising the roll out of Android 9 Pie update as soon as possible.
The Razer Phone 2 will retail for $799 through Razer’s site and will be available for pre-order starting October 11 and begin shipping October 22.
