So, it's been just over a week since Apple released iOS 4.2.1 which has unified mobile devices that run on the operating system. There have been many anticipated features of this software upgrade, but I think most would agree the number one requested feature was printing capabilities from iOS devices, mostly the iPad. Apple has obliged with the new AirPrint feature, sort of.
AirPrint allows users to print documents or photos over Wi-Fi to a printer connected to the same network as their mobile device without the need for third party applications.
Initially this version would allow printing to a multitude of printers as well as utilizing printers that are shared through your Mac. As we all know by now this was a bit ambitious for the 4.2.1 release and the AirPrint functionality has been scaled back considerably. As of now, AirPrint is only functional with a short list of HP printers, and the function to utilize shared printers has been shelved by Apple at this point, hopefully held back for the next release rumored to be mid-December.
So, what will it take to utilize this much awaited feature? Right now, a list of nine HP printers supported by AirPrint are listed below:
- HP ENVY100 e-All-in-One
- HP LaserJet Pro CM1415f
- HP LaserJet Pro CP1525HP
- LaserJet Pro M1536dnf
- HP Photosmart e-All-in-One
- HP Photosmart eStation
- HP Photosmart Plus e-All-in-One
- HP Photosmart Premium e-All-in-One
- HP Photosmart Premium Fax e-All-in-One
Six new printers will be launching next month that are also AirPrint compatible which are listed below:
- HP Officejet 6500A e-All-in-One
- HP Officejet 6500A Plus e-All-in-One
- HP Officejet 7500A Wide Format e-All-in-One
- HP Officejet Pro 8500A e-All-in-One
- HP Officejet Pro 8500A Plus e-All-in-One
- HP Officejet Pro 8500A Premium e-All-in-One
If you don't have one of these printers, and you just can't wait for iOS 4.3 to drop in December, there are a couple of solutions out there for you. Two that we will review in the near future are Printopia and Fingerprint.
That's were we all stand in the printing capabilities of our iOS devices and although this feature may not be where we all hoped we would be at this point, it is well on it's way.
Are you printing from your iOS device? If so do you have a compatible printer, using a third party app or did you hack your scripts? Let me know below.
