I remember when I was 13-years-old, and Pokémon was just coming to America. Nintendo Power, rest their souls, did a wonderful job localizing the Japanese hype machine. My parents had to take me to KFC just to get the beanbag toys, South Park made a huge jump in quality satirizing the craze with the famous Chinpokomon episode, and my Game Boy had to be confiscated several times by annoyed teachers telling me not to get sucked up in stupid fads.

Well, 15 years later and the joke is still on them. Pokémon turned out to be more than just a fad, and the series remains just as popular as ever. The most recent games, Pokémon Black and White 2, have just crossed the 7.5 million units sold worldwide marker. Granted, that's only half the amount the first version of Black and White were able to sell, but I think it's more of a sign fans are ready to move on from the DS iterations of the series rather than them being just plain tired of it all.

And low and behold, Nintendo already has a next generation Pokémon series, Pokémon X and Pokémon Y, lined up for the Nintendo 3DS. Keeping in tradition with most new generations of Nintendo handhelds, Nintendo is wisely holding off on releasing the popular series and allowing their handheld to get some serious groundswell. That way, everybody will be able to enjoy the game when it launches.

The Nintendo 3DS just broke 30 million units, more than enough to guarantee these games will be big hits. Pokémon X and Pokémon Y are slated for an October release worldwide, a first for the franchise.

In the meantime, now that the Nintendo DS' extended run of Pokémon games is complete, which was your favorite?
