Here’s a bit of a weird flash sale from the PlayStation Store, but at least I walked away extremely satisfied. Sony dubs this latest bargain bin as “Survival Deals,” meaning all of the games have a theme of survival to them, and yet, all that I walked away with was a handful of PSP JRPGs.

How does that work out? Let’s look at the list below.

You get the idea. Lots of zombies, post-apocalypse, guns, gloom and doom, and open-ended survival gameplay. LIMBO, BioShock, BadlandsXCOM, MetroLone Survivor, MachinariumGodzilla, Race the SunEverybody’s Gone to Rapture, the unfathomably wonderful Tokyo Jungle, and the centerpiece of all this survival, Don’t Starve. All are fun games, even Godzilla to an extent that doesn’t quite reach $24.

And yet, JRPG publishers XSEED and NipponIchi decided to play a little liberally with the definition of survival, bringing some unsung JRPG gems into the mix.

Half-Minute Hero isn’t too much of a stretch with the definition of survival. Our hero has only 30 seconds to stop the destruction of Earth, and his job is to survive by extending that time and killing the final boss.  It’s one of the best games on the PSP, so don’t overlook it. Black Rock Shooter The Game tiptoes along the border of survival as well, but it has a dark tone to it that I guess could categorize it post-apocalypse.

Z.H.P. Unlosing Ranger VS Darkdeath Evilman is a superhero roguelike from the team that brought you Disgaea, and as a roguelike, it’s core gameplay naturally all about survival. Get as far as you can before you die. And then there is Lunar: Silver Star Harmony, which I can’t justify in any way as being about survival. All of these games have been dropped to all-time low prices that I just couldn’t ignore.

Toss in a few others I already owned like Ys Seven and you have a solid little JRPG sale tucked away under all these other quality survival games. The movie choices are a bit more conventional survival movies. Excellent flash sale, Sony. It’s been a while.
