Happy Golden Week, everyone! No quite sure what that is? Golden Week is a string of national holidays in Japan which, when tied together, essentially becomes the country’s spring vacation. It is one of the busiest travel periods of the year, and it is also one of the most expensive travel periods because Japan knows when to hike up prices better than most countries.

Not Sony, though. It is using the week to spread the joy and pleasure of some of Japan’s most celebrated games of that last few years. 25 games have seen a price drop of 50 percent or more, and of course, PlayStation Plus subscribers get an even larger discount. Check out the list of games below, or don’t if you want to keep your wallet safe.

Too many great games to just ignore, but it’s a terrible situation if you are trying to get your digital purchase addiction under control. The obvious standout is Persona 4 Golden, the PS Vita port of Atlus’ PlayStation 2 classic. I just picked up my Vita, and this game influenced my purchase greatly. I was waiting for a sale, but I might hold of until the next one as I just picked up a few RPGs that I need to play first.

One of those which I bought last week was Ys: Memories of Celceta, just before it went on sale. No need for buyers remorse though, because it is a great game worth any asking price. Strange thing was that I bought it for the non-PlayStation Plus sales price at $27.99 before the sale even began. A bug perhaps?

From there, Square’s Super Nintendo classic Chrono Trigger is up for sale, but you might want to hold off on this one. The PlayStation version of this masterpiece is anything but a masterpiece. It’s known for its crippling load times which make jumping into battle and even opening the menu screen an absolute hassle. Only pick this up if you don’t have access to a Super Nintendo or Nintendo DS.

On the other hand, Chrono Cross is there for the exact same price and plays just fine. The sequel is a polarizing game that galvanized the Chrono fanbase. I lean towards the side of saying it’s a pretty good game, but an absolutely terrible sequel.

After that, there are a few HD collections worth checking out, namely for Devil May Cry, Zone of the Enders, Metal Gear Solid, and Tales of Symphonia. The fours bundles include games from an age when Japanese games were far more celebrated and were the rule, not the exception. I long for the days when games like these were not be treated with such a niche attitude. All four are easily worth the asking price.

A few stragglers on the list: rain and Muramasa Rebirth are decent little games worth checking out, and SoulCalibur V might be worth the price. SoulCalibur IV and other games are more worth your time, though. The Atelier games also have a small but vocal fanbase. I’ve never played them, but I can see the appeal just by looking at screenshots.

I can’t recommend Ys: Memories of Celceta enough for anybody looking for a great handheld RPG, especially for Zelda fans, and somebody seriously needs to stop me from buying up a copy of Persona 4 Golden! I have a backlog that is way too large to make room for an 80 hour JRPG! Anybody else see anything they really want?
