Another month, another victory for the PlayStation 4 says the NPD group. That makes it nine consecutive months now. Some were wondering if Microsoft's free game deal would push gamers to pick up Destiny with the Xbox One, but Bungie's shooter only help triple sales of Sony's machine over the month before.
The Xbox One can claim victory to the best selling individual copy of the game though, scoring the number one spot on the SKU list for the month. The NPD group admits that this list does not take into consideration the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 bundles which included the game though, and these sales were boosted by the fact that it was free as an individual copy.
Sony issued a statement, claiming that Destiny turned in the biggest month in PlayStation Network history and the largest month ever for the PlayStation Store's revenue. No solid figures were provided to back this up, but judging how much Sony did to promote the game, I think it goes without saying Destiny did very well on Sony platforms.
Microsoft also issued a statement, reading:
"We believe this will be one of our biggest holiday seasons ever. We're offering great Xbox One bundles aligned with the most anticipated game launches of the year, including Assassins Creed Unity, Sunset Overdrive and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, and incredible deals for fans. Combined with blockbusters like Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Grand Theft Auto 5, Destiny and Forza Horizon 2, we are committed to making Xbox One a great place to play this holiday."
But let us not forget about Nintendo as well, who is still kicking up a huge storm. Super Smash Bros. was big for the company in getting Nintendo 3DS consoles off the shelves. The game itself sold 705,000 copies in the first two days of availability, 135,000 of those digitally through the eShop, and it managed to shift 140,000 Nintendo 3DS systems into the hands of gamers, a 55 percent increase over the previous month.
So far, the game has sold 2.8 million copies worldwide in total.
Nintendo also reports that the Wii U continues to steadily climb in sales thanks to impressive showings from Hyrule Warriors and Mario Kart 8. No specifics were provided in that regard.
The top ten best selling physical games in September were as follows. It's nice to see Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor crack the list as well after being released on September 30th. One day was all it took I suppose. What a great game.
