The PlayStation 4 released last week, and it’s already vanished from the shelves. In the first 24 hours alone, the console sold through its entire initial shipment of 1 million units, making it the biggest console launch in American history.
Sony Computer Entertainment President and Group CEO Andrew House proclaimed the console to be a great success and issued a statement on the enormous launch.
“PS4 was designed with an unwavering commitment to gamers, and we are thrilled that consumer reaction has been so phenomenal. Sales remain very strong in North America, and we expect continued enthusiasm as we launch the PlayStation 4 in Europe and Latin America on November 29. We are extremely grateful for the passion of PlayStation fans and thank them for their continued support.”
The biggest console launch of all time now belongs to Sony. Granted, in this day and age of technology, launches are highly publicized and statistics are followed much more closely, this information matters much more than a decade ago. Despite that, it’s still a very impressive figure and title to put on your belt buckle.
Microsoft will launch the Xbox One this week, so we will see how the two compared after the first 24 hours by next week.
Sorry if you were unable to snag a PlayStation 4 on the initial wave, but you’ll have to join me along with the rest of the late bloomers on this new console generation. Buying a console at launch seems a little pointless, and just like all three other PlayStations, I’m going to wait for something to knock me off my feet and demand I buy it.
If you bought late into the PlayStation consoles, what was the game that finally turned you over? Final Fantasy VII is an obvious choice for the first PlayStation, but it was Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Solid 2 and Final Fantasy X which had me jump into the PlayStation 2. What a great line-up to follow up on a horrible launch. Valkyria Chronicles was my first must purchase game for the PlayStation 3.
What game is it going to be for the PlayStation 4? Final Fantasy XV is a good bet based on the series’ history alone, but so far, Sony’s latest hasn’t snagged that killer app yet.
