PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, the Battle Royale-stile multiplayer shooter that’s taken the gaming world by storm, has sold more than four million copies since its launch in March. Keep in mind the game is still in Early Access, which makes its popularity all the more impressive.
“I genuinely appreciate all the love and support the fans have shown to PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS,” said Chang Han Kim, Vice President and Executive Producer for Bluehole. “Our team is working passionately to deliver a stable gameplay experience as we prepare for our full launch later this year.”
After a full launch on PC, Bluehole plans to release a console version for Xbox One, which was announced at E3 2017. As of now, the game is said to be a console launch exclusive, though Bluehole hasn’t shared any details about a possible version for PlayStation 4.
Using a Battle Royale premise, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds drops up to 100 players on a map and challenges them to survive until they’re the last one standing. It’s a lot harder than it sounds, because players have to navigate the map’s difficult terrain, manage weapon inventory, and survive against other players.
In Bluehole’s announcement this week, the developer also revealed some astonishing stats. Like, for example, the fact that 15-percent of all Twitch users watch others play the game every day. Meanwhile, more than 100,000 sessions are played daily.
As the game’s popularity grows, however, the pressure mounts for Bluehole to better optimize the game. The developer has continued to introduce monthly updates, so the experience has improved. However, plenty of work needs to be done before it’s finished and ready for a wider audience.
