A lot of big AAA games claim to be “RPGs” these days, but the defining qualities of the genre are becoming looser and looser with each passing year because of it. Never fear because a tried and true masterpiece modeled after the genre during its creative peak will finally be making its way to consoles to show this generation how it’s really done.

Pillars of Eternity will be released for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on Aug. 29. From its days as a record-setting Kickstarter campaign to its reign as one of the most universally praised games of 2015, Pillars of Eternity has left a blazing trail behind it, reintroducing the world to how RPGs worked when they first started taking the PC world by storm.

Iconic RPG studio Obsidian Entertainment based the foundations of its game on the old Infinity Engine library. Games like legendary titles Baldur’s Gate, Icewind Dale, and Planescape Torment, many of the games that its employees worked on back at the turn of the millenium, all contributed to its inspiration.

I’m not sure how such a game will work with a game controller and no mouse or keyboard, but porting studio Paradox Interactive has lots of experience in making it work.

That’s why today, together with our friends at Obsidian, we are thrilled to announce that this once-in-a-lifetime RPG is ready for PlayStation fans everywhere, in Pillars of Eternity: Complete Edition. And we do mean “complete” — not only will you get to experience the original Pillars of Eternity on PS4, but you’ll also visit the expanded world and new characters from The White March: Parts I & II, the two expansions that arrived alongside the core game. You’ll have the full experience in your hands on August 29th, 2017, available at PlayStation Store and in game stores everywhere!

Pillars of Eternity will be available on Aug. 29 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It will also most likely be on sale through Steam this week during the Steam Summer Sale.
