I suppose the only people who will instantly understand the headline that runs along the top of this article are those who consider themselves big Pikmin fans. Fans understand that the major difference between Pikmin and Pikmin 2 is, put simply, stress.
Pikmin was a timed game. You started a level and only had a certain amount of time to complete the tasks in front of you. When the timer expired, you lost. Pikmin 2 ditched that timer in favor of a less stress-inducing environment. Players were placed on the surface of the world and then given as much time as they needed to explore and find everything.
I vastly preferred the lack of a timer. The world of Pikmin invites slow and methodical exploration, so I genuinely think Pikmin 2 is a better treatment of the universe. This is were I differ in opinion with Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of Pikmin. Here he is in a recent interview with GamesMaster Magazine in regards to the process of creating Pikmin 3:
"First of all by looking at Pikmin 1 we noticed that it wasn't a very easy game for people to play, and from time to time they had to feel some stress…
…Our main aim in Pikmin 2 was to get rid of any stress as much as possible, so that it would be very user-friendly. Well, I myself couldn't agree with that direction perfectly. That kind of nature of Pikmin 1 was exactly what I wanted to reproduce and I was actually intentionally doing so, so that Pikmin 1 could be a strategic game."
Miyamoto took that opinion and made sure it was brought to the forefront for the development of Pikmin 3.
"When we started creating Pikmin 3 I gathered the main members who worked on Pikmin 2 and talked about how I thought it was important to get back to the basics of Pikmin 1. Or I should say that half of my job at that time wasn't just to talk, but rather to persuade them to understand what I intended to do and to agree to my idea."
Those paying enough attention might have noticed that Miyamoto did not once mention the timer portion of either game. He refers to one as stressful, and that's about it. Based on Miyamoto's quote, we know Pikmin 3 will be more like the original than the second game. Based on inference, I assume Pikmin 3 will sport timers on each level.
Pikmin 3 is currently set to release for the Wii U some time in the Spring of 2013.
