One week after the Japanese launch, SEGA's upcoming free-to-play online RPG Phantasy Star Online 2 has officially been announced for American and European audiences. SEGA published a press release through the game's biggest fansite PSOWorld stating that western countries will be getting the game next year along with as sweet new trailer. Vice President Chris Olson had this to say:
"Phantasy Star Online was a revolutionary game when it was released, and we want to make sure that its successor in the series is every bit as ambitious."
Gotta say, SEGA nailed the game's look sticking to the bright aesthetic of Phantasy Star Online live, rather than turning to a dark a gritty sci-fi RPG world most other series would have taken. The contrasting look of futuristic colonies set amongst uninhabitable lands is one Japanese anime style has always worked well with. The music and sound from the new teaser website pso2.com fits perfectly too.
The idea of playing Phantasy Star Online 2 on a PC, though, kind of registers as a bit awkward considering the original's claim to fame is being the first game to get online gaming for the consoles done right. Small little elitist gripe, as many fans can only play the original online through a PC these days anyway.
The open beta closed on July 2nd in Japan, and the game launched on July 4th. The official Japanese site and downloading options can be found here as well as a nice little guide to getting the game running if you just HAVE to play it now. The PS Vita version will launch next year in Japan as well.
