Peter Mayhew

Peter Mayhew, the actor who played Chewbacca in the original Star Wars trilogy, and in The Force Awakens, has died. His family has announced on Twitter that Peter died at the age of 74, surrounded by family in his Texas home. The man behind the Wookie mask is survived by his wife Angie, and three children.

Peter was a giant of a man at 7 feet, 4 inches, and played Chewbacca in all of the original Star Wars films. He returned for The Force Awakens, wrote two books, and was also active in the Star Wars convention circuit. During his life, Peter was heavily involved with the 501st Legion, Wounded Warriors, Make-a-Wish and other non-profit organizations.

It led him to create the Peter Mayhew Foundation which has aided people in everything from supporting families in crisis situations, to bringing food and aid to children in Venezuela. Peter was involved with every person, family, and cause that he gave his support to.

A memorial for friends and family members will be held on June 29th. In December a memorial for fans will be set up in Los Angeles, California, with his family in attendance. His family also asks that instead of gifts or flowers, you donate to the Peter Mayhew Foundation so that his efforts to help the community can live on.
