Today Panasonic revealed the Lumix DMC-FX90—a point-and-shoot compact with Wi-Fi and the ability to upload images to Panasonic’s first cloud-based Lumix Club. The virtual Lumix Club will be accessible by a smartphone or computer browser and allows for immediate uploads to Facebook, Flickr, Picasa or YouTube.

“With the FX90’s Wi-Fi connectivity capabilities, users can now share these photos instantly on popular social networks via an iPhone or Android OS-based smartphones,” said Darin Pepple, Senior Product Manager, Imaging, Panasonic Consumer Electronics Company.

How does it work? Users must download the Lumix Link application on their iPhone or Android smartphone. Then, users have to pair the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX90 to their device via Lumix Link using the handy dandy Wi-Fi button on the back of the camera. Users can then download images to the Lumix Cloud using their smartphone, where they can then be uploaded directly to various social media outlets.

If you don’t want to go through all of that trouble, you can just wirelessly upload the images directly to social sites using a secure Wi-Fi connection and your home computer, but if you’re out shooting, the ability to upload them straight to the Lumix Club on your phone is quite handy. However, it’s one more step compared to taking a picture with your smartphone and posting it instantly.

If you look at it this way, an SD card-based camera requires taking out the card, saving images to your computer, and uploading from there. With the Lumix Link method, this can all be done remotely and almost instantly,  like a detour to buying an Eye-Fi card.
