While Blizzard still isn’t talking about Sombra specifically, the long-rumored character might be join Overwatch sooner rather than later. In a community update, director Jeff Kaplan provided some vague but encouraging information about new content we can expect to see coming to Blizzard’s team-based shooter.

“One hero is very far along. It’s coming together very well, we’re playtesting it internally across the entire company. We believe this hero will see the light of day sooner rather than later,” he said.

Another hero is “in very internal developer form – we’re using all placeholder models and effects and animations, just to prove that the hero is fun. But we feel like we’ve found another really great Overwatch hero that will see the light of day probably sometime next year. That one’s further out.”

That sure makes it sound like the first hero he referenced is coming sometime this year, doesn’t it?

Kaplan says the team is also working on “a lot of maps.” One of those maps is far along, and has enough playtesting in that they have their art team working on it. Kaplan didn’t provide a release window for this one. They have another map for existing modes in early production, and a “number of maps – about four” in early development for new game modes. Some of them, Kaplan said, won’t see the light of day.

A new hero and a new map soon, and another of each later gives us something to look forward to, and the prospect of new modes is exciting and encouraging. Overwatch is still huge five months after release, and the standard modes are still providing plenty of fun. A new mode would only sweeten the deal. The community update is pretty wide reaching, discussing changes to Symmetra, as well as new camera options for eSports spectating, and worth a look if you’re actively playing Overwatch.
