Developer Red Barrels this week made a few announcements related to Outlast, including confirmation that the original will make its way to the Switch early next year. The next time someone tells you the Switch is for kids, kindly tell them to play Outlast and see what they say.
If anything, the game’s arrival further confirms the console is highly regarded among the developer community. Not only is it a great platform for indie games, but titles that are a few years old.
Outlast’s port over to the Switch joins a myriad of big games coming to Nintendo’s portable console, including L.A. Noire, Skyrim and Inside. A date hasn’t been set for Outlast’s release on the Switch, but Red Barrels did say early 2018.
In addition, the team confirmed it’s working on another game in the Outlast universes. The game isn’t expected to be a sequel to the first or second game. Rather, it’s going to be a “distinct experience set in the Outlast universe.”
Red Barrels added, “We can’t say more right now, we first need to make sure we can make it work. Like I mentioned, we strive to be risk-takers and this one is a pretty big challenge. If all goes well, we’ll soon be able to reveal more.”
After releasing Outlast in 2013, Red Barrels followed that up with a sequel that hit earlier this year. Both titles feature similar gameplay mechanics that force players to run and hide from threats, rather than fighting back with weapons.
What made the original Outlast so great was its sound design, pacing, and twisted story. It’s unclear if the experience will translate well to the Switch, but it’s exciting to learn that it’s on the way.
