Robert Englund is best known for his portrayal of the iconic ’80s horror character Freddy Krueger in the A Nightmare on Elm Street movies, though he hasn’t worn the makeup or claws in over 15 years. But he came out of retirement for a special occasion—The Goldbergs’ lampooning of the classic horror movie.
The ABC comedy takes place in the 1980s and often likes to make fun of pop culture of the day. In the upcoming special Halloween episode of its sixth season, The Goldbergs will take on Freddy Krueger and the series managed to talk Robert Englund out of retirement. He makes his triumphant return as the character in the episode “Mister Knifey-Hands” and ABC released terrifying new images of him back in action.
The episode will revolve around Adam watching A Nightmare on Elm Street, which Beverly doesn’t think is a great idea, but then it’s Beverly who has nightmares about Freddy Krueger.
Most of the pictures are of Englund in full Freddy Krueger makeup, which is quite impressive. Some of the pictures do make fun of classic scenes of the movies with the most notable one being the recreation of the classic A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors scene, just this time it’s done with Wendi McLendon-Covey’s Beverly Goldberg character.
We must say, even after all these years, Robert Englund can still pull off the role. The Halloween episode of The Goldbergs will air October 24 on ABC.
