Yesterday, we reported that OnePlus would be the “first to feature the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor” in an upcoming device. That seemed like a huge coup for the Chinese company, which wasn’t even set to unveil its next smartphone until next summer.

Turns out, the announcement was too good to be true.

OnePlus was forced to admit that the phrasing of the news was a mistake and the OnePlus 7 won’t be the first smartphone to offer the Snapdragon 855 chip, but one of the first. The miscommunication stemmed from an error in the slide used to reveal the news.

The mistake is regrettable, but it does clear up some big questions we had. Qualcomm made it clear the Snapdragon 855 processor is ready to go, yet if it was first featured in the OnePlus 7, that means it wouldn’t arrive for at least another six months since OnePlus typically doesn’t unveil its first major flagship of the year until the summer.

With clarification, this sets up Samsung’s Galaxy S10, which is expected to be announced at Mobile World Congress in February, to officially bring the powerful chip to the masses much earlier.

When the OnePlus 7 does arrive in mid-2019, count on it featuring the Snapdragon 855 chip; it just won’t be the first device to do so.
