Evenly matched flagships

When the P30 Pro launched, it was one of the most beautiful and powerful smartphones we'd ever seen. With a nearly bezel-less display and a striking gradient paint job, Huawei's flagship shines like a rare jewel, a device that will have people doing double-takes.

The OnePlus 7 Pro gives the P30 Pro's design a run for its money. With a bezel-less display and a gorgeous Nebula Blue colorway, the OnePlus 7 Pro is a triumph when it comes to smartphone luxury. Both phones are elegant, but OnePlus' device looks a little more premium and futuristic.

On the inside, the devices are pretty similar: both have triple-camera setups, 7nm processors, and in-display fingerprint sensors. Speaking of which, we've found the P30 Pro's in-display fingerprint sensor to be a little slow to engage and unlock, which is something to keep in mind.

Both devices also come equipped with similar size batteries, so many aspects in this comparison are a wash. There are, however, a few important differences.

The OnePlus 7 Pro's 6.67-inch AMOLED display has an eye-popping 3120x1440 resolution while the P30 Pro features a 6.47-inch display with a 2340x1080 resolution. The OnePlus 7 Pro can also be configured with up to 12GB of RAM, compared to the P30 Pro's 8GB of RAM.

In terms of usability, the OnePlus 7 Pro's OxygenOS is far more enjoyable to use. In fact, it's arguably the best take on Android we've seen. It's clean, sleek, and doesn't feature any unnecessary bloat. Huawei's EMUI, meanwhile, doesn't feel quiet as refined. Huawei has made plenty of improvements over the past few years, but it still needs a lot of work.

While the OnePlus 7 Pro beats out the P30 Pro in display quality and design, there are a few areas where the P30 Pro is the clear winner. For example, the P30 Pro supports wireless charging and features an IP68 rating. The OnePlus 7 Pro doesn't support either of those things. The lack of wireless charging is particularly frustrating considering most modern flagships support the feature.

The P30 Pro's camera is better

The P30 Pro offers arguably the best camera on the market right now, even rivaling Google's Pixel 3. Although the OnePlus 7 Pro now features a triple-camera setup, it simply can't compete with the P30 Pro, which takes high quality images that are crisp, vibrant, and true-to-life.

One of the P30 Pro's standout features is the zoom lens that goes all the way up to 10x without any major loss in quality. It's such a nice feature to have when taking a portrait or shooting something that's really far away. It makes the P30 Pro's camera experience really flexible and a lot more enjoyable to use.

OnePlus devices have developed a reputation for taking mediocre photos, and the OnePlus 7 Pro doesn't do much to change that opinion. Photos are good enough, but nowhere as good as what's created using the P30 Pro. If the camera is your primary concern, then the P30 Pro is the smarter buy.

Which phone should you buy?

The OnePlus 7 Pro and P30 Pro are pretty evenly matched. If this were a boxing match, the scorecards would be pretty close, but we'd give the slight edge to the OnePlus 7 Pro because of its futuristic design, clean software, and affordable price. It's also globally accessible, whereas the P30 Pro isn't available in the U.S.

As good as the P30 Pro's camera is, it's not hundreds of dollars better. Sure, the OnePlus 7 Pro's triple-camera can't hold a candle to what's offered by the P30 Pro, but what you get with the OnePlus 7 Pro ultimately makes it a much better value.
