Following the leak of a supposed OnePlus 6T box last week, OnePlus has confirmed a major design change is about to be introduced. When the OnePlus 6T is released this fall, the device will feature an in-display fingerprint sensor, which OnePlus has dubbed “Screen Unlock.”
OnePlus provided a screenshot of what Screen Unlock’s UI will look like. Similar to other in-display implementations, there will be a visual symbol that indicates where a user should place their finger.
It’s a big change for OnePlus. If done correctly—and if it’s reliable—the feature could elevate the company’s reputation as a major player among Android manufacturers. OnePlus already has a cultish following; once the OnePlus 6T becomes available, more consumers might start to take notice.
“We unlock our phones multiple times a day, and Screen Unlock reduces the number of steps to complete the action,” OnePlus told CNET. “By adding this feature as an addition to other display unlocking options such as Face Unlock, users will have options to unlock the display in a way that is most efficient for them.”
Not only do we know the device will feature a gorgeous design, clean software and an affordable price, the addition of an in-display fingerprint sensor should help the OnePlus 6T stand out among its peers. With the Galaxy Note 8, iPhone XS, and Google Pixel 3 all coming (or already available), OnePlus will need all the advantages it can get.
We’re also expecting the OnePlus 6T to feature a teardrop notch, greatly reducing the notch size found in the OnePlus 6. CNET also confirmed the OnePlus 6T will feature a design that’s slighter thicker due to the new design.
OnePlus didn’t say when the OnePlus 6T will be announced, but if history is anything to go by, we should expect something in November.
This is what users will see when they unlock the OnePlus 6T
