In September 2017, Apple promised us a magical wireless charging solution called the AirPower that would let three devices charge at once. A year later, it has yet to deliver on its promise and it remains unclear if it ever will, but what is clear is that the competition is running with Apple’s idea and flourishing, including Nomad.
Nomad unveiled its Base Station, a wireless charging mat that can charge two devices at once via 10W outputs. This will charge any wireless charging-enabled phone within a timely manner. Not only that, it also has a USB-A (7.5W) port and USB-C Power Delivery (18W) port just for redundancy purposes in case you need to charge an extra device. Nomad says it uses a three-coil system to charge devices, a different method from the standard single-coil found in most wireless charging systems.
Since Nomad also specializes in leather goods, it outfitted the Base Station with black padded leather. It also included LED indicators that let you know your devices are charging and ambient light sensors that dim the LEDs at night.
Using the wireless charging mat and ports, the Base Station can charge up to four devices simultaneously.
While not as impressive or ambitious as Apple’s AirPower and its reported 24-coil charging system, the Base Station actually exists. Nomad says it will go on sale beginning October 8 and cost $99.95.
