We already knew it was coming, and now it’s official. After keeping quiet during several leaky spells earlier this year, Nokia on Tuesday finally—finally!—announced the Lumia Icon for Verizon. While its unlikely to grab headlines like last year’s Lumia 1020, the Icon has all the staples we’ve come to appreciate about the Lumia family: terrific design, speedy specs, solid user experience—stuff Windows Phone fans will fawn over. This time around, however, the Icon actually has a decent name (um, Icon) and not some boring string of numbers.

First and foremost, Nokia’s new Icon is a handsome devil. Made using a polycarbonate rear shell—a popular material in the Lumia world—the Icon features a smooth aluminum ring that surrounds the device’s edges, giving it a much more premium feel compared to, say, something like a Lumia 920. Instead of recycling the unibody shell, Nokia’s done a nice job updating the design while still keeping it familiar. We’d still prefer for Nokia to shave off some of the Icon’s thickness, but overall it exudes quality, and feels as durable as ever.

Internally, the Icon features specs we’ve come to expect in a flagship device: 5-inch 1080p OLED display (441 ppi), Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM, and 20-megapixel PureView with OIS. Additionally, the device sports 32GB of internal memory (with 7GB of free SkyDrive storage), NFC, Bluetooth 4.0, 2420mAh battery (with wireless charging capabilities), and Windows Phone 8 GDR3 with Nokia Lumia Black, offering the most comprehensive Windows phone experience yet.

Nothing too surprising given all the leaks we’ve seen, but certainly a device worth taking note of in the Windows Phone space. It’s been awhile since we’ve seen action out of Nokia—an expected lull following Microsoft’s purchase of the Finnish company’s mobile business last year—but the Icon shows that Nokia still has a few tricks up its sleeves. That said, we’re still expecting some big things out of Nokia at Mobile World Congress later this month, so don’t count the company out just yet.

The Lumia Icon will hit Verizon Wireless store shelves on February 20 for $199.99 with a new two-year contract. Stay tuned for more coverage of the device.
