Nokia update tracker

Following the release of another battery fix for its Lumia 800 yesterday, Nokia has launched a new software update tracker that allows users to find out when updates are available to download for their Lumia smartphones.

The page breaks down the availability of each update by country, carrier, and product code, allowing users to find out the current status of their update. Nokia also explains what each status means:

Launch software = Lumia 800 was launched with version 1600.2487.8107.12070

Update available = Update to version 1600.2487.8107.12070 has been published

Waiting for approval = Update to version 1600.2487.8107.12070 has been submitted for operator and/or local review

Update not available = Update to version 1600.2487.8107.12070 will not be launched for this product code and/or country

In addition to this, Nokia has provided an FAQ page that provides information on update scope and availability, including details on what the new software brings and when Nokia plans to complete its rollout; instructions on how to update; and a list of general questions about its devices.

The site highlights the huge number of different software variants Nokia must rollout for the same device based on carrier and location, and it shows the discrepancies between carrier approval and release. This might explain why your friend already has the Lumia 800 update from his carrier, while you’re still waiting for it.

Microsoft previously offered a similar service for all Windows Phone devices, called ‘Where’s My Phone Update’. However, earlier this year the company abandoned the service, offering no explanation for its decision.

If you’re a Nokia Lumia owner, will the new software update tracker be useful to you?
