Nokia Lumia 900 white

Nokia recently sent out press invites for an event that will take place in New York City on September 5th. The company will no doubt introduce its next-generation Windows Phone 8 Lumia-branded smartphones and, honestly, we can't wait to see what's in store. Still, Nokia might be getting just a bit ahead of itself. Chris Weber, the executive vice president of sales and marketing recently tweeted "Samsung take note, next generation Lumia coming soon."

I like Chris Weber a lot, I've had dinner with him and he has always been incredibly excited about the Lumia brand. Still, taking on the world's largest smartphone maker through Twitter seems silly.

According to a recent report from Gartner, Samsung was the king of the global mobile market during the second quarter, with a 21.6% market share. Nokia, meanwhile, had a 19.9% stake in the market. Worse, Nokia isn't even holding a flame to Samsung or Apple in the global smartphone market. In fact, a recent report from ABI Research found that Samsung shipped 43 million smartphone units during the first quarter of this year. Apple, meanwhile, shipped 35 million. The two firms are raking in 90% of the market's profits, too. Yeah, it's like leaves under an oak tree in the fall. Nokia? It shipped 11.9 million units shipped during the same period.

Look, we can't wait for Nokia's next smartphone announcement, and we're excited the company and its leadership are dedicated. But asking the world's largest smartphone maker to take note? It will take more than Windows Phone, Nokia.
