Today at Nokia World in London, Nokia announced the Nokia Lumia 710. The budget-friendly handset sports a lot of the same specs as the high-end Nokia Lumia 800, but with a plastic form-factor, LCD instead of AMOLED screen, and a 5-megapixel camera.

One unique feature of the 710 is that it has removable back covers. The covers are available in all the same colors as Windows Phone tiles (black, white, cyan, fuchsia and yellow), so you can match your phone theme or spice things up a bit by having pink tiles and a yellow back etc.

In addition to the walk-through I did with Nokia (video above) I also got quite a bit of time to play with the handset this morning.

We’re having a little bit of a data issue here at the conference (as most big tech events do) so I wasn’t able to try out some of the data-specific apps like Nokia’s new Mix radio service or the navigation functionality. I did get to try out other functionality on the phone, which all zipped along quickly and was easy to navigate. If you’re familiar with Mango, the 710 interface is going to look exceptionally familiar to you, with the Nokia-specific Navigation, Sports, and Music apps being the only ones you might not be familiar will out of the box.

When you’re looking at it side-by-side with the Nokia 800, there’s no denying that the 710 is bulkier and slightly less pocket-friendly than its higher-end counterpart. One comparison that immediately came to mind while looking at both phones was the iPhone 3Gs vs. the iPhone 4, which sport roughly the types of differences you’re going to notice off the bat between the 710 and 800. The screen on the 800 looks amazing, the screen on the 710 is nice- but definitely not as nice. The 710 is a nice looking and feeling phone on its own, but when you put it beside the sexy sleek 800, it loses a bit of that luster.

Overall I was pretty impressed with how the handset performed, and if I was looking for a budget WP handset I wouldn’t hesitate in picking one of these up.

Need a spec refresher from this morning:
