Steam Storefront Updates

The PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One? They both feature ads in prominent places on their dashboards. On the home console front, both platform makers currently hold the top positions. They can dictate the standard.

For the PC world, that standard is currently dictated by Valve with Steam. Does Steam have ads? No. Will Steam have ads? No.

Valve's Eirk Johnson spoke with GameSpot about Steam and the value of ads on their platform. They asked him directly if a "product like Doritos might ever be advertised on Steam," a question clearly levied at Microsoft's connection to the product.

"We don't see a case for that ever getting user value…

…So we wouldn't do it. I don't think that those ever work, either. To take it a step further, I don't think anybody buys Doritos as a result of that."

I love that last bit, don't you? Do the ads even work? Probably not.

Johnson continued, talking about the money ad programs cost to set up and the negative buzz they generate, while getting even more candid.

"It would be a bad business decision, let alone just dumb."

Thanks, Valve!
