A week after introducing the Nintendo Switch Lite, Nintendo has updated the original model. According to Nintendo, the revised Nintendo Switch features improved battery life, upping usage up to an impressive 9 hours. The previous model got anywhere from 2.5 to 6.5 hours of battery life.

It's unclear what else Nintendo tweaked to make such a drastic improvements to battery life. However, recent evidence suggests the company quietly updated the Switch's CPU, which could be responsible for the gains. Up to 9 hours of handheld play is a major difference compared to the original's 6.5 hours.

Here's the battery life of every Nintendo Switch available:

  • Original Nintendo Switch = 2.5 - 6.5 hours
  • Nintendo Switch Lite = 3 - 7 hours
  • Revised Nintendo Switch = 4.5 - 9 hours

To get an idea of how much battery life has been improved, Nintendo says that Switch owners will be able to play The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for up to 5.5 hours on the new model; the original Switch could survive for around 3 hours before dying.

Nintendo didn't say when the updated Switch will be in stores, but if you do plan on picking one up, look out for serial numbers starting with XKW (model #HAC-001). The new Nintendo Switch is available for $299.
