The Nintendo Switch launched on March 3, 2017. Initially, Nintendo estimated that they’d sell around two million systems in March, and they planned to produce eight million consoles over the first fiscal year.
A report from The Wall Street Journal and its anonymous sources, however, indicates that Nintendo has changed its production plans for the Switch. They’ll make 16 million systems before the end of this fiscal year, doubling their initial mark. Furthermore, those sources say that the Switch could sell 2.5 million units in March, up from that initial two million projected.
Nintendo’s not been specific, but the Switch is doing well out of the gate
We do know that the Switch had reportedly sold more than 1.5 million globally earlier this week, and word from Nintendo was that it outsold the Wii on its opening weekend in North America.
The platform is off to an exceptionally strong start, and most would assume that’s thanks to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. If Nintendo can rake in diehards now, they might be able to get more casual consumers this Christmas when it’s not just a Zelda machine. By that point, the platform will have Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Splatoon 2 and Super Mario Odyssey, on top of lots more in the way of relatively niche offerings.
Also, production should have a lot more Switches available in the wild by the time the holiday demand hits.
