The Nintendo Switch launched worldwide last Friday, March 3, and it was the talk of the weekend. Some had it pre-ordered, some went with online retailers and some waited in lines to partake in midnight launches.
GameStop was one of the shops holding midnight launch events, and it sounds like the Switch has been a hot item for the retailer. Game Rant caught up with GameStop Senior Director of Merchandising Eric Bright for how the launch went. He told them that stores were packed, and then he went on to say that “this is one of the strongest and most successful gaming console launches for GameStop in the last several years.”
“For those fans who are still looking for the Nintendo Switch, don’t worry–we’re getting more. And, we’re pretty sure that there are a lot of gaming fans who pulled all-nighters last night playing their new Switch, and who also called in sick to work today with ‘game-fluenza’ just to stay home and play even more.”
That suggests it’s up there with the PS4 and Xbox One
Bright stopped short of offering any true numbers, but his wording suggests that the Switch’s launch is up there with the PS4 and Xbox One in terms of popularity.
Of course, we’ll see how this plays out in the weeks and months after the launch of the system. Initial word has been positive, but that could change or dwindle as time rolls on.
