You’ve seen the reveal video, you’ve read about the expensive Joy-Cons. You probably even watched the exceptionally popular parental controls clip. Let’s talk about the games. Let’s talk about what Nintendo Switch will have playable on March 3, 2017.
Three ports, three originals. Let’s take a close look at the launch lineup on the Nintendo Switch.
For me, this is the most intriguing of the launch day releases for the Nintendo Switch. Of course, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will be the pinnacle of the roster, but 1-2 Switch is the game that might be the most compelling in the batch.
It’s this platform’s tech demo title. Nintendo’s rather good at these, too. Nintendo Land, for all the flak it got, had some interesting minigames on display. Wii Sports was enormous. Now, I imagine 1-2 Switch with its collection of activities will fall somewhere between Wii Sports and Nintendo Land.
It could be a really fun game, and it could show us that Nintendo’s improved upon motion control in some incredible ways. There’s supposedly “HD Rumble” here, and the Joy-Con even feature cameras.
Again, I’m intrigued by 1-2 Switch. I’m not sure it’ll be a success, but I’m cautiously looking forward to it.
Just Dance 2017
Just Dance has become an easy grab for Ubisoft. It commands a tight following, and it appeals to a broad audience. I imagine, though, that the folks lining up for a Switch in March aren’t the ones dying to fire up Just Dance 2017.
This entry is supposedly solid, though it’s been knocked for not really being enough of a game-changer. It’s the best dancing game, but that genre has come to a crashing halt as of late.
It’s also an old game that dropped on all of the current systems last year. Yep, this is a port.
This is the latest chapter in Skylanders, and it’s the follow-up to Skylanders: SuperChargers. Here’s the thing, this game launched on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Wii U, Xbox One and Xbox 360 last year. This is a pure Nintendo Switch port.
The game did scoop up decent reviews at launch, though. There are some microtransaction issues, and gamers have become sick and tired of extra plastic from all these dang toys, but this is supposedly a solid Skylanders title.
Of the Switch launch titles, it’s likely seeing the least attention, perhaps as much as Just Dance 2017.
Super Bomberman R
Bomberman fans, rejoice. Konami’s gone a bit AWOL over the last few years. They’ve parted with Hideo Kojima, canceled games like Silent Hills after its absurdly successful PlayStation demo and they have pushed all their major properties onto pachinko machines.
Yet, here we are, looking at a genuine Bomberman game with Super Bomberman R. It looks, actually, really good. The only controversy it’s stirred up has centered around its price point. It’s not been 100% settled by Konami in all territories, though most think $59.99 is a touch too high.
We’ll see. I’m just glad it’s not a pachinko game.
The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+
This image comes from a tweet. Developer Nicalis might have inadvertently revealed the Switch’s dark mode UI. The tweet has since been deleted.
A port? Sort of. The Binding of Isaac is an old game that’s made its way to lots of platforms, sure. Afterbirth+ is the most recent expansion that offers loads new items, a new chapter, a new boss, a new playable character, new challenges, new modes and more.
The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ is the full game complete with this expansion. It is a new title, though it’s already out on other platforms. It also released to mix reviews on Steam, so take that for what it’s worth.
And that’s it. That’s the lineup for the Nintendo Switch. Getting one?
Dang, you thought I forgot Zelda!? OF COURSE I DIDN’T FORGET ZELDA.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
This is the big one. This is the game Nintendo’s hung its hat on for the launch of the Nintendo Switch. It’s the biggest game in the lineup, it’s one of the biggest games of the year and it could be the biggest game Nintendo’s ever made. Literally, on that last one.
The trailer during the Nintendo Switch’s big event really did it for me with this game. It was always something I was excited for, don’t get me wrong, but this trailer just pushed that hype to new levels. And the voice acting that’s present? Here we go! A hybrid of voice acting and text is perfect. It works exceptionally well in games like the upcoming (and amazing, read my review) Yakuza 0, and it could work well for Zelda, too.
This trailer, folks, look at it.
This is the Switch game I’m looking forward to most in 2017. It’s the one I plan to dump a hundred hours into, at least.
I’ve been thinking a lot about Zelda lately, and I’m digging out my copy of Skyward Sword to get ready for Breath of the Wild. I had a lot of problems with Skyward Sword. Eiji Aonuma, Producer of the franchise, just spoke with Waypoint about addressing one of the things I disliked most about SS.
We listened to a lot of opinions, from people who played Skyward Sword. And a lot of people said to us how they found the game… Not exactly unsatisfying, but they wish they could have explored the areas between the strongholds. So taking that on board, from the very start of Breath of the Wild, we wanted to, and set out to, create a world that wasn’t only vast, but where everything was connected. So you really could freely explore the world, without these barriers or gaps imposed.
Yes, Aonuma, that’s me. If you really improved upon that and made this a Zelda worth exploring? I’m in. I’m so in.
