Back in January, Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime said that the Nintendo Switch would not use Friend Codes for adding friends.

“People have taken shots at us for [our online infrastructure],” said Reggie Fils-Aime in an interview with CNET. “There are no friend codes within what we’re doing…”

He was wrong. With the Day-1 patch for the Nintendo Switch, the Add Friend page in the system’s UI has an option for Friend Codes. Here’s a screenshot from GamesBeat.

Reggie. The Nintendo Switch uses Friend Codes.

Maybe Fils-Aime just had is info wrong, maybe he didn’t know and ignorantly offered a comment. Or, maybe Nintendo was set on skipping Friend Codes back in January but wound up changing their minds. Whatever the case may be, Fils-Aime was wrong about the Nintendo Switch and Friend Codes.

You’ll be able to search for local players, search for those you’ve played with or, of course, search by Friend Codes. Nintendo will continue to receive potshots from fans and critics until they ditch the Friend Code system. It’s cumbersome at best.
