The Switch isn't slowing down. In less than two years, there have been 22.86 million units sold around the world. That's a huge milestone due to the small window in which Nintendo's sold this video game console. It was released in March 2017, but the Japanese company continues pushing it with well-known franchises and large-scale advertising campaigns.
Nintendo sold 3.19 million units in the last quarter alone. The holidays are expected to double that, leading the Switch's user base to explode as 2019 begins.
By comparison, it took the GameCube more than five years to reach a similar sales figure. The GameCube was discontinued at 21.74 million units sold. Nintendo will reportedly offer an upgraded Switch next year, but it won't act as a successor to the current model. So there's a lot of life left in this platform.
For its bottom line, the Switch was a significant part of Nintendo's $2 billion in total revenue. The company's operating profit, meanwhile, came in at $274 million. Nintendo hasn't experienced a surge in revenue and profit, but there's good news on the horizon.
As we head into the holidays, Nintendo has several big-name titles lined up to be released. Pokémon: Let's Go arrives in two weeks, and then Super Smash Bros. Ultimate takes over in December. Third-party titles are incoming, too. Blizzard's Diablo III and Capcom's Mega Man 11 are among them.
In 2019, we'll see more blockbusters like Luigi's Mansion 3 and an untitled Pokémon game. Needless to say, Nintendo fixed the shortage-related issue that plagued the Wii U.
Be on the lookout for deals during the holidays. Nintendo and its retailers are live with several promotions on bundles and individual games, and you can score them to bring home a Switch or something fresh to play while saving money.
