The Nintendo Switch, and even the Nintendo 3DS, are battling an image crisis that they are running out of games to play. Thanks to yesterday's Nintendo Direct, though, the company's fledgling console and aging handheld are both set to keep players busy throughout the summer.

The Switch's reveal way back in January came accompanied by two promising multiplayer games that now have release dates. The awkward fighting game ARMS will be released on June 16, and Nintendo took the chance to show off a brand new character and an arsenal of weapons.

The other title is the much-anticipated sequel Splatoon 2, a follow-up to Nintendo's smash-hit Wii U shooter. Nintendo confirmed the release date of July 21 and the oft-requested inclusion of a horde mode, making co-op multiplayer now a lot more fun.

Not forgetting that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe comes out at the end of the month, we're looking at three solid multiplayer games to waste away your summer months with friends and family. The full list of games also includes the Nintendo Switch version of Minecraft, launching on May 11, and Disgaea 5 Complete on May 23. Those should provide a healthy dose of "me time," as well.

Nintendo isn't abandoning the Nintendo 3DS either

While long-term plans for the Nintendo 3DS remain a huge question mark, we are at least seeing a handful of titles reach us before the end of 2017. Yesterday's Nintendo Direct confirmed a host of release dates that should help fill in the gaps between your bouts with ARMS, Splatoon 2, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

  • Bye-Bye BoxBoy – today!
  • Team Kirby Clash Deluxe – today and free!
  • RPG Maker Fes – June 27
  • Ever Oasis – July 23
  • Hey Pikmin – July 28
  • Culdcept Revolt – Aug. 28
  • Yo-kai Watch 2: Psychic Specters – Fall 2017
  • Miitopia – Fall 2017
  • Monster Hunter Stories – Fall 2017

Fire Emblem EchoesShadows of Valentia also has a release date for April 20, meaning your Nintendo 3DS still has at least another season or two worth of playing time inside of it.

It's a solid line-up leading into Super Mario Odyssey this coming holiday season. Hopefully, I can find one by then.
