Wii U TV

As a sign of the changing times at Nintendo, the company has taken a head start in moving on from the Wii U by announcing the closure of its Nintendo TVii app. Fans have been using it for several years to find and interact with television programming through the Wii U's GamePad controller, but the service will be brought to a close on Aug. 11.

Nintendo made the announcement through the Nintendo TVii Miiverse account.

After almost 3 years of finding, watching and engaging with Nintendo TVii, we will be ending the service on August 11, 2015 at 3:00pm PT. At the same time, we will be closing the Nintendo TVii Miiverse community. We sincerely thank you for all of your engagement within the community and the Nintendo TVii service. We look forward to your contributions within our many other Miiverse communities.

Next month's update will remove the app from your Wii U console. Take the news as you will. I've never used Nintendo TVii, but I'm sure that's just because I've been in Japan throughout my Wii U's entire tenure. I can't speak to its quality or practicality. Netflix, Hulu, and other video apps will not be affected in the update.

Nintendo further explains on a Support FAQ site that "it is time to focus our resources on other projects," so my guess is that those resources will be poured into Nintendo's next gaming machine, the NX. I'm so hoping for that handheld/TV hybrid. That's the only kind of gaming "console" I would possibly consider purchasing anymore.

In fact, I won't even be looking to see if it comes with any television support like Nintendo TVii. Just a gaming contraption would be fine and dandy for me.
