Satoru Iwata

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata has passed away at the age of 55, the company said in a brief statement addressing his passing.

Nintendo Co., Ltd. deeply regrets to announce that President Satoru Iwata passed away on July 11, 2015 due to a bile duct growth.

Iwata had been battling complications with a bile duct growth for several years. He was forced to take time off from work last year, forcing him to miss E3 2014 to undergo surgery. He returned to his duties later in October, but his presence was again missed at E3 2015 in June.

Iwata had a long history at Nintendo before becoming its president in 2002. He worked on several early hits like Earthbound and many games at Kirby studio HAL Laboratories before taking up the business side of game development, where he oversaw Nintendo at its most profitable period during the Wii and Nintendo DS years.

No interim president has been announced at this time by Nintendo.
