South Park And Its Gone

That excellent Metroid II remake wasn't the only trademark obstacle Nintendo took down yesterday. Earlier in the week, we reported on an attempt to catalog every issue of the classic gaming magazine Nintendo Power in the online library at Archive.org.

Well, you can see where this is going. Nintendo, doing what it legally has to do to protect its intellectual property, had all of the issues taken down. All 145 issues just… vanished. Nostalgic memories, gone!

In a statement, Nintendo declared that this must be done to protect its rights.

The unapproved use of Nintendo's intellectual property can weaken our ability to protect and preserve it, or to possibly use it for new projects.

Yeah? And how are those new projects coming along? Oh, they aren't.

There's obviously a demand for these classic magazines, and Nintendo knows better than almost anyone that nostalgia sells. If the fans can't have these magazines illegitimately, certainly there is a way Nintendo can put them online through its own terms. What's it going to be, Nintendo?
