Nintendo is apparently distributing NX development kits, a move that suggests they're working towards releasing their next platform. This comes from The Wall Street Journal and "people familiar with the matter."

Not much is known about the NX from these sources close to the matter. They don't indicate anything regarding the actual shape of the unit or the power it contains. However, they do indicate that the kit will "likely include" a console and a mobile unit that can be used with the console or taken on the road.

Think about that for a second. The discussion now is that the NX could potentially replace both the Wii U and 3DS. The console could feature a Wii U GamePad like device that can be taken away from home and played on the go all by itself. It needs to be much stronger than the Wii U's GamePad, of course, but that's an interesting notion.

Every console launch is preceded by the distribution of development kits. Third party developers need the kits in order to make games in time for launch. Hopefully Nintendo can muster a launch roster that's stronger than the Wii U's. A Zelda will help the cause.

This is a rumor for now, but what do you think of its implications?
