Despite there being limited supply, the Nintendo Switch has sold very well since it went on sale in March. Just imagine how it would do if it was easy to find—which is will be in 2018, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Nintendo is reportedly aiming to make up to 30 million units of the Switch in its next fiscal year, which begins April 2018. That’s a huge number for a gaming console. To put that into context, the PlayStation 4 has sold around 60 million units since going on sale in 2013.
If Nintendo can sustain the Switch’s momentum, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the company sell every single one of the 30 million units it makes. That’s what happens when you offer games like Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey as your flagship titles.
With ambitions to ramp up production, Nintendo’s next step will be to introduce its online service and some type of Virtual Console experience. Rumors are still swirling about the company potentially introducing GameCube games to the portable console, along with titles from the NES, SNES, and N64.
If you haven’t hopped onto the Switch’s hype train, now might be a good time to buy a ticket. In addition to the release of Super Mario Odyssey, the Switch is also getting a healthy dose of third-party content before the year is up, including Doom, Rocket League, and L.A. Noire.
