I have a slightly embarrassing history getting lost and in over my head with the RPG Maker series. Dating way back to the original PlayStation release and dabbling with the likes of RPG Maker 2000 and RPG Maker 2003, I definitely started a lot more games than I ultimately finished. Still, the allure is always there, never ceasing to be creative in my favorite genre through some outlet.
While some turn to Steam for their RPG Maker software, I might just check out this upcoming Nintendo 3DS version of the game. NipponIchi is set to publish the title on June 27, and I definitely have a lot of train time I can dedicate to telling stories. Plus, with NipponIchi, you can get the Disgaea cast to cameo in your games. How fun!

On creating a fun RPG without infinite options
Obviously, the drawback of the Nintendo 3DS version is that you don't have access to all of the software that the PC versions have. Sprites are limited, character art doesn't have many options, and your imagination can be held back.
This is fine for me, though. I like being creative, but I prefer being creative within limitations. If I have access to the limitless possibilities of the Internet, then I'll definitely never finish up any games. With this, I can stay focused without the nitty-gritty details, sinking hours into perfecting sprites and drawing characters I'll never actually get around to using. It's a casual approach to RPG creation, but that's all I need.
RPG Maker Fes comes to the Nintendo 3DS on June 27.
